TOP SPOTS: Arlene Dickinson

Story by Caitlin Agnew. Photograph courtesy of Arlene Dickinson.

Starring in Dragons’ Den is no easy task, but Arlene Dickinson manages to do it with professionalism, grace, and impeccable style. As the CEO of Venture Communications, Dickinson provides marketing services for the likes of Toyota, Unilever, and the LCBO. With an astute eye for the next big thing (she was the first Dragon to start a Twitter account back in 2008), she’s the image-savvy dragon, and arguably the one with the best (and most fiery) head on her shoulders.

Dickinson shared a few of her favourite places in Toronto with The Style Notebook.

What’s your favourite place to go for a drink during the week (and what’s your drink of choice?)

“I enjoy the patio and lounge at ONE (116 Yorkville Ave., 416-961-9600) for people watching and doing business. Belvedere vodka and soda with olives, please!”

To go for a drink on the weekend

“At my cottage. If I’m in the city there’s so many options—I have a commitment to visit a new bar/restaurant every month so I can explore them all and mix it up.”

Favourite brunch spot

Fresh on Bloor (326 Bloor St. W., 416-531-2635) and Kalendar Koffee House (546 College St., 416-923-4128).”

Top date spot

“Anywhere he wants to take me!”

Place to buy birthday presents

“I love all the small antique shops on Queen and the little boutique stores on College. My latest quest has been to buy old magazines that were printed around the time of the person’s birthday. Very cool.”

Gym or place to work out

“The roads in my neighborhood for a run and my exercise room at home.”

Pho, dim sum or sushi?

Blowfish (668 King St. W., 416-860-0606) and Starfish (100 Adelaide St. E., 416-366-7827) are my two faves.”

Place to buy books or magazines

“Currently the Toronto airport—I seem to spend a lot of time there!”

Top spot to buy shoes

Specchio’s (1240 Bay St., 416-961-7989).”

Favourite overall retail experience

“Online shopping. I enjoy the convenience and the variety. Holts (50 Bloor St. W.) is always a winner, though, for great service and wonderful selection.”

Favourite vintage shop

The Cat’s Meow (180 Avenue Rd., 647-435-5875).”

Place to check out art

“I like to check out the galleries on Avenue Road.”

Neighbourhood to go for a walk in

“I enjoy strolling along Bloor for shopping.”

Place to meet a friend for coffee

Jimmy’s Coffee (107 Portland St., 416-901-2289).”

Top spa

Hammam Spa (602 King St. W., 416-366-4772).”

Place in the city where you feel most at home

“I’m a downtown city girl. I love the city and the vibe, energy and variety of things to do.”

Check out Dragons’ Den every Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBC.
